It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Welwyn Garden City!
The Welwyn Garden City’s Business Improvement District (BID) team, who are responsible for a number of fantastic events throughout the year in Welwyn Garden City, contacted me to photograph their annual Christmas light switch on.
This is a hugely popular event in the calendar for families. Welwyn Garden City’s town centre closed off to traffic and transformed in a fairground with rides for little ones right up to the fearless thrill seekers. There were plenty of food and refreshments options from the vast array of stalls selling hot food, homemade pies, candy floss and the obligatory mulled wine and spiced ciders.
The snow dome with artificial snow was a huge hit with families. It was great fun photographing the absolute joy on the children’s faces as they got covered in the snow (without having to endure the cold and wet that usually accompanies real snow).
As well as fairground rides and stalls, children enjoyed face painting, meeting birds of prey and real reindeers, and of course the essential trip to Santa’s grotto.
As the light faded local children took part in a lantern parade around the town, followed by a number of musical performances on the main stage and some serious dancing by Minnie & Mickey to get the crowd ready for the Christmas light switch on countdown.
